Extended Backstory
Part 1 — Childhood
Khutani had some high expectations placed upon him early in life, which he quickly and efficiently failed to live up to.
While his aptitude was initially judged to be full of potential by his mother — a powerful sorceress — he did not take to the aetheric arts whatsoever. And despite the martial aptitude of his father, his technique, if not his physique, was woefully lacking; he handily failed to live up to the legacy of either parent.
This bothered them more than him. Despite his shortcomings, he was great at making friends. He learned the art of flattery young, and found plenty of chores and crafts that made him useful. On the other hand, his disinclination to train with his peers meant as time went on, he felt more and more out of place as his peers grew into hardened warriors, and he... didn't.
As his coming of age drew near, and familial scolding became more severe, his long-held idle thought of running away from home blossomed into an appealing plan of action. He base his time until the day he was entrusted with one of the tribe’s important, if perfectly regular, errands to trade with other tribes for supplies; he took the opportunity to take the goods to ease his journey away from the Steppe, and towards Hingashi.
~Many surprises awaited him after he made his exhausting trek from the Azim Steppe. For instance, there was a notable fee for crossing the sea which he was completely unaware of. His “carefully” considered supplies turned out to be insufficient for this purpose; he was fleeced for all he was worth quite thoroughly while trying to purchase his way across.
Luckily, he had a useful talent he could use; luck itself. Gambling was always a popular pasttime, whether at home or among the Confederacy, and in short order he gambled with his last belongings until, much to their disbelief, his rivals at the dice found themselves owing him money instead. At that point, he was able to make his way to Kugane without worrying about the Tithe at all.
